Style Guide: What to Wear for your Photo Session

This guide is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and thoughtfully styled, without overthinking it. I’ve included seasonal outfit inspiration for women, men, and children, along with a few easy coordination and finishing touch tips to help everything come together seamlessly.

When planning what to wear for your photo session, I always recommend starting with pieces that feel elevated, timeless, and true to you. I love a subtle nod to current trends, but the foundation of your look should be classic and effortless.
The goal is simple: images that feel just as beautiful five or ten years from now as they do today.
General Styling Guidelines
Comfort comes first
If you feel good in what you’re wearing, it will show. Choose pieces that fit well and allow you to move naturally. Anything that feels restrictive or needs constant adjusting is best avoided.
Coordinate, don’t match
Rather than wearing identical outfits, aim for colours and textures that complement one another. This keeps the overall look cohesive while still feeling natural and refined.
Timeless over trendy
Classic silhouettes and neutral tones always photograph beautifully. Trends can be layered in gently, but simplicity will stand the test of time.
Layers add depth
Especially in cooler seasons, layering creates dimension and visual interest without overwhelming the image.
Keep patterns minimal
One subtle pattern can work nicely, but too many can distract from the emotion and connection in the photo, particularly in group sessions.

Seasonal Styling Inspiration

Spring Sessions
Spring styling is soft, light, and airy. Think breathable fabrics and gentle layers that reflect the freshness of the season. Pastels, muted blues, and blush tones pair beautifully with spring greenery.
Women: Light blouses with high-waisted trousers, or a fitted midi skirt with a soft jacket
Men: A tailored blazer or cardigan with chinos, or a crisp shirt with relaxed sleeves
Kids: Flowing dresses with cardigans, or shorts paired with button-up shirts
Summer Sessions
Summer is all about ease. Lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton keep things cool while maintaining a polished look. Bright light pairs best with lighter tones and relaxed silhouettes.
Women : Linen blouses with tailored shorts, breezy jumpsuits, or midi dresses with a coastal feel
Men : Casual button-ups with light trousers, or fitted polos and t-shirts with shorts
Kids : Soft cotton sets, rompers, and breathable outfits made for movement
Colour palette: Creams, soft greys, light blues, warm neutrals
Fall Sessions
Fall invites texture, warmth, and rich tones. Layering knits, jackets, and structured pieces adds depth and creates a cozy, editorial feel that photographs beautifully in golden light.
Women: Knit sweaters with pleated midi skirts, or tailored coats with wide-leg trousers
Men: Wool jackets or cable-knit sweaters paired with dark denim or chinos
Kids: Corduroy trousers, plaid shirts, layered sweaters, and boots
Colour palette: Burgundy, camel, mustard, navy, earthy neutrals
Winter Sessions
Winter styling is about warmth with intention. Structured coats, cozy knits, and deeper tones create striking contrast against winter landscapes. Accessories add both function and visual interest.
Women: Wool coats with tailored jeans or trousers, or sweater dresses with tights and boots
Men: Flannel shirts or wool sweaters layered with scarves and dark denim
Kids: Knit hats, warm sweaters, and layered coats or vests
Colour palette: Forest green, charcoal, navy, grey, deep reds
styling for group
Stay within a similar colour family for a cohesive look
Mix tones and shades rather than matching exactly
Balance patterns with solid pieces to keep everything feeling clean and timeless
Accessories
Accessories should feel intentional, never overwhelming.
Women : Delicate gold or silver jewelry, simple necklaces, statement earrings, or a refined scarf elevate your look beautifully.
Men : Watches, belts, scarves, or subtle accessories add polish without drawing attention away from the overall image.
Kids : Keep it simple and functional, cute shoes, soft hair accessories, or a cozy hat are more than enough.
finishing touches
HAIR : If you are planning a hair cut or colour, do so (if you can), just in case something goes wrong.
NAILS : Pick a neutral colour that won't distract in your shoot or clash with your outfits.
OTHERS : If your other services are due for example lash fill, shave/wax etc etc. it is highly recommend to do so as it will cut off a lot of time and energy.
a final note
The most important thing you can bring to your session is confidence. Choose pieces that feel true to you, polished, comfortable, and effortlessly authentic. This guide is meant to inspire, not limit. When you feel at ease in what you’re wearing, it translates beautifully on camera.
And if you ever feel uncertain, I’m always here to help you curate and refine your selections.
